Australia and Indonesia are strengthening healthcare ties as part of Australia’s Invested strategy to 2040.

NARASINETWORK.COM - Supporting healthcare development across Indonesia stands as a central pillar of "Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040" a comprehensive framework designed to foster deeper economic and collaborative ties between Australia and nations across the region. To advance this objective, the Jakarta Deal Team is actively collaborating with leading Australian investors, including Icon Group (Icon), to establish connections with key stakeholders and institutions throughout Indonesia, driving meaningful growth and improvement in the country’s healthcare sector.

As one of Australia’s foremost providers of cancer care and medical services, Icon has recently marked a significant milestone in its international expansion by launching its first fully integrated oncology centre in Indonesia. The initiative is delivered in partnership with Bali International Hospital (BIH), which operates as part of Indonesia Healthcare Corporation (IHC) a state-owned enterprise dedicated to developing and managing high-quality healthcare facilities across the nation.

The new oncology centre is strategically situated within the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Bali. This location provides unique regulatory advantages that enable Icon to bring in foreign specialist doctors who hold full licences to practise alongside their Indonesian counterparts. The arrangement facilitates seamless collaboration between international medical experts and local healthcare professionals, combining global best practices in cancer treatment with deep understanding of patient needs and conditions specific to the Indonesian context.

Through this partnership, Icon and BIH are able to deliver world-class cancer care directly to patients in Indonesia. The integrated centre offers a complete continuum of services, encompassing diagnostic imaging, medical oncology, radiation therapy, surgical oncology, and supportive care programs. This holistic approach to treatment while avoiding the use of the term itself in formal description ensures that patients receive coordinated, comprehensive support throughout their care journey, from initial diagnosis through to follow-up and rehabilitation.

The collaboration builds on long-standing bilateral cooperation between Australia and Indonesia in the healthcare domain. Over recent years, Australian institutions have shared expertise in areas ranging from medical education and training to healthcare infrastructure development and health system governance. The Jakarta Deal Team’s work with Icon Group represents a natural progression of these efforts, leveraging private sector capabilities to expand access to advanced medical services for communities across Indonesia.

In addition to delivering direct patient care, the partnership is designed to support capacity building within Indonesia’s healthcare workforce. Foreign specialists working at the Sanur centre will engage in regular knowledge-sharing activities, including clinical rounds, case discussions, and professional development sessions with Indonesian doctors and nurses. These interactions help to transfer skills, update clinical practices, and enhance the overall capability of local healthcare providers to manage complex cancer cases independently in the future.

The establishment of the integrated oncology centre also aligns with Indonesia’s national health priorities, which include reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases such as cancer. By making advanced treatment options available locally, the initiative helps to address the growing demand for specialised care while reducing the need for patients to seek treatment overseas a factor that can place significant financial and logistical strain on individuals and their families.

Commenting on the partnership, representatives from the Jakarta Deal Team have noted that the collaboration with Icon Group demonstrates how Australian expertise can be effectively tailored to meet local needs and regulatory requirements. The model developed for the Sanur centre is being considered as a potential blueprint for future healthcare projects in other regions of Indonesia, with a view to expanding access to advanced medical services beyond major urban centres.

Icon Group has also highlighted its commitment to long-term engagement in Indonesia, with plans to invest in further infrastructure, technology, and training initiatives as the partnership evolves. The company recognises that sustainable healthcare development requires ongoing investment in both facilities and people, and is dedicated to working alongside Indonesian partners to build a robust, resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of the population for generations to come.
