NARASINETWORK.COM - On 14 January 2026, His Excellency Dr Chem Widhya, Secretary General of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), welcomed His Excellency Tornike Nozadze, Ambassador of Georgia to Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), for a courtesy call at AIPA’s secretariat offices.
During the meeting, both officials engaged in wide-ranging discussion of the existing relationship between AIPA and Georgia’s parliament. They confirmed the shared dedication to building stronger, more effective cooperation between the two institutions, with particular focus on advancing collaboration through parliamentary diplomacy.
The Parliament of Georgia was awarded observer status to AIPA during the 43rd AIPA General Assembly, which took place in Cambodia in 2022. Since that time, regular dialogue has been maintained to explore areas where joint work can deliver practical benefit to both sides.
AIPA recognises the value of working closely with all its Observer Parliaments, including Georgia. The assembly actively pursues opportunities to create connections between legislators, share experience on matters of common interest, and support initiatives that bring parliaments closer together.
The discussions covered potential areas for future collaboration, including exchange programmes for parliamentary staff, joint research on topics relevant to legislative work, and participation in AIPA’s various committees and working groups. The Ambassador highlighted Georgia’s interest in learning from AIPA’s experience in regional parliamentary cooperation, while the Secretary General noted the potential for Georgia to contribute insights from its own legislative practices.
Both parties agreed that parliamentary diplomacy plays an important role in supporting broader international relations, creating channels for communication that complement work carried out at government level. They committed to maintaining regular contact and to taking concrete steps to ensure that cooperation between AIPA and Georgia’s parliament continues to develop in a positive direction.
AIPA’s work with Observer Parliaments forms an important part of its mandate to promote inter-parliamentary dialogue across the globe. The assembly remains focused on ensuring that these partnerships are active, relevant, and deliver real value for all involved parties.
