NARASINETWORK.COM - Australia and Indonesia are collaborating to enhance road and urban transport systems via the Indonesia Australia Partnership for Infrastructure (KIAT). This initiative aims to upgrade transport networks, providing improved support for communities across Indonesia.
In January, partners celebrated progress in delivering safer, more accessible, and climate-adapted transport systems. These improvements are designed to benefit all population groups, with a particular focus on women and people with disabilities.
The project involves joint work with Indonesia's National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) and the Directorate General of Highways (Bina Marga), under the Ministry of Public Works. This collaboration supports infrastructure development at both national and subnational levels, covering road design, construction standards, and regional network links.
Partners participated in "Indonesia on the Move," an event showcasing advancements in urban mobility and integrated transport planning. The gathering brought together government officials, industry representatives, and technical experts to share approaches and discuss sector priorities.
At the event, Bappenas Deputy Minister for Infrastructure Abdul Malik Sadat Idris and Australian Embassy Minister Counsellor Jonathan Gilbert led discussions on potential investment options. Conversations centred on climate-responsive transport solutions, including technologies and planning methods that reduce environmental impact while improving service provision. Senior representatives from Indonesian institutions and regional governments joined the dialogue to explore local implementation.
The partnership supports Indonesia's infrastructure development programme, with coordination across government agencies, including the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Ministry of Transportation, and PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (Persero). International support is provided by the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank Group.
KIAT's work includes technical assistance for policy design, training for government teams, and support for pilot projects demonstrating new transport models. The programme addresses current issues in Indonesia’s transport sector while establishing foundations for future expansion and improved access.
