NARASINETWORK.COM - The World Poetry Movement (WPM), headquartered in Colombia, orchestrated a powerful virtual event, "Global Action for Palestine," on June 28-29, 2025. This significant initiative united poets and artists from across the globe in a resounding expression of solidarity with the Palestinian people's struggle for justice and peace. The event built upon the success of a previous WPM Indonesia event, "Indonesian Poets Reading Gaza: Save and Love for Gaza," held in Jakarta on May 31, 2025.
This international collaboration brought together an impressive 140 poets and contributors representing 91 countries. Among them were four talented Indonesian poets: Nuyang Jaimee, Sastri Bakry, Isbedy Stiawan ZS, and Anwar Putra Bayu. Their participation underscored Indonesia's commitment to the Palestinian cause and highlighted the unifying power of poetry in fostering global understanding and action.
The virtual event featured prominent voices from Palestine itself, including Murad Sudani (President of the Palestinian Writers' Union), Abdullah Issa (WPM Coordinator in Palestine), the acclaimed poet Hanan Awwad, and the internationally recognized poet and artist Ashraf Fayad. Their powerful readings and messages formed the core of the event, providing a direct connection to the ongoing struggle in Palestine. Other Palestinian poets, Youseff Hatiti and Nahjwan Darwish, also contributed their voices to this significant event.
The breadth of international participation was truly remarkable. Poets and representatives from across Africa, including Zolani Mkiva (South Africa), Siphiwe Nzima (Lesotho), Keamogetse Molapong (Namibia), and many others, lent their voices to the cause. Similarly, a diverse array of poets from Asia, such as Adonis (Syria), Ali Al Ameri (Jordan), Lorca Sbeity (Lebanon), and representatives from countries including India, China, Japan, and many more, participated. Oceania was represented by poets from Australia, New Zealand, and others, while Europe’s participation included poets from countries such as Italy, France, Spain, and the UK. The Americas were well-represented, with poets from countries including the United States, Canada, Brazil, and many others joining the chorus of voices. A full list of participants, while extensive, is available upon request.
Beyond poetry readings, the event incorporated musical elements, including fragments of songs by Chiwoniso Maraire (Zimbabwe), and musical contributions from Nikolai Orzak (Tuva), Savina Yanatou (Greece), and the indigenous Huitoto people from the Amazon. This fusion of artistic expressions amplified the message of solidarity and hope.
The "Global Action for Palestine" event served as a powerful demonstration of the unifying potential of art and its capacity to inspire global action for justice and peace. It highlighted the ongoing struggle in Palestine and the unwavering commitment of artists and activists worldwide to supporting the Palestinian people.
